Parking permits in Oakland — my story gets people talking

A story I pitched to my editor got taken up by the Oakland Tribune and generated a lot of mail (most of it to me). It was nice to get that kind of response — I really touched a nerve.

Locals say tickets city’s fault

Residents in North Oakland are upset at not getting parking permit renewal notices while they’re still getting ticketed for expired stickers.

Now some are feeling frustration with the city’s response to the missing letters and new tickets.

“I believe that they believe they mailed them. But we didn’t receive them,” said Lisa Aliferis, a Rockridge resident who was ticketed.

Oakland’s parking division said that renewal notices were mailed to every address on record.

“We checked with the mailroom, they indicated they sent them all out,” said parking division manager Francine Larkrith-Thompson.

For Sunnen, it was a success that came later in life — he began his maid service business at the age of 50 after his wife encouraged him to follow his entrepreneurial dream.

“It was a big, big step for me,” he said.

By Maya Mirsky

Construction at the Safeway in Montclair Village has some residents complaining about incessant noise.

Neighbors say calls to Safeway went unanswered while noise levels were intolerable for those living close by.

“This has been extreme and unbearable,” said Rachel Epstein, a nursing student whose apartment looks out over the construction.
